There is nothing I look forward to more than trips with my family. We count down the days, look at the vacation home photos over and over, and discuss all the fun we know we're going to have together. We have something special in our fam bam where we actually all really love and look forward to being with each other.
After a complete whirlwind of a week at work, I shut down my laptop and promised myself I will not open it again (for work) unless I am called with an emergency. This is a big deal for me and I'm really looking forward to all the farts, jokes, cuddles, snacks, meltdowns, milk spills, and s'mores that will be this vacation!!
Jon is very efficient when it comes to packing for a trip. I'm talking like Major Dad kind of stuff. He knows how to pack the right snacks, roll up the clothes to save space, and use the suction bag thingy to pack it all in. I'm telling you, he could start a business. So I think it gave him a skosh of a sweat when I announced I had to stop at the library on the way because I'd forgotten to stop and do it earlier in the week. And the idea of going away for a trip without a stack of books a mile high makes ME break into a sweat :)
We piled in and hit the road! Jon made the most amazing playlist - every song was a hit with me. One thing I love doing is driving long distances because I don't get to do it often. Plus I'm really nervous when other people drive so it's always a better bet when I'm behind the wheel.
We always stop at In N Out on the way to Tahoe and today was no exception. I get the veggie style and fries, and clearly I have no shame when it comes to eating them. The Dude loves to put his head out the window when we drive and we're always telling him to sit back so the seatbelt will work if it needs to. I love watching them in the backseat talking to each other and playing games.
We were completely blown away by the house when we got there - beyond words. Our entire flat in San Francisco could fit in the kitchen alone. There are four bedrooms and four bathrooms and to me that was worth the 4-hour trip alone!!! Do you know what it's like to share a 1-bathroom flat with three males? [shudder]
Jon won the vote to head to the store and stock up on groceries. Shopping for food in Tahoe on the weekend can be kind of a hairdo. The kids were complaining of complete starvation an hour later so we boiled up some pasta and heats garlic bread. It was delicious though I can't start into a carb spiral now that I'm on vacation!!
We weren't at the house for one hour before Croc had already found the garage door entrance and hidden himself inside. Thank goodness Jon remembered to lock the car first. (Croc has been known to lock himself in the car on vacations - don't ask...I told you he's the real runner in the group.)
I feel so blessed to have this time together. I keep saying "It's the summer of us" and the boys laugh. Tomorrow I have a long run ahead of me and the air is much thinner up here so it should be interesting... I'm going to hydrate and hope for the best!
