Running as fast as you can for as long as you can every day rarely leads to personal bests and instead leads to injury and overtraining. Racing fast means running smart and targeting workouts at precise paces that reap specific benefits.
Today I ran a few miles at tempo pace at the gym and it did feel uncomfortable during certain moments, but then I remembered these runs are supposed to feel harder than my long ones. It's okay to have my breath speed up and my legs burn. I focused on my form, keeping all my muscles very loose except those deepest in my core. On a treadmill it's easy to let your form slip so I thought of all the things I wrote about last week: keeping my core strong, shortening my stride, relaxing, bending forward a bit at the ankles to let gravity help me along.
I always pick the treadmill right by the window so I can people watch the whole time! Oh the characters you see in downtown San Francisco in the middle of the day... True to form, I secured a nice bright red face in less than 30 minutes!
It seems like at various points in my life I've either had my exercise, my work life, or my eating exactly where I wanted it to be, but I have rarely ever been in a place where I have all three where I want them to be! Honestly, I have no excuse five days a week to NOT eat healthy! My company offers all kinds of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner -- vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, alcohol-free, nut-free -- ALL OF IT! They made it very easy for me to give up eating meat. And with all the pretty salads they make to choose from, I definitely always pile them on my plate. My biggest issue is starting to eat the lunch, then getting pulled away for a meeting or discussion and never returning to finish it. I'm going to start blocking 30 minutes a work day to eat my lunch outside. You heard it here first, folks! Big improvements happening! :)
I came home after my gym workout and wanted to do a 30-minute video but couldn't decide if I wanted to do a core workout, yoga, or butt/leg strength so I picked this one that combined all three!
Lyle decided to join me for part of it until he got a little too rowdy jumping on me and then had to try to steal my cell phone while I was attempting a totally un-staged self shot of me doing yoga. That kid is like a fart in a skillet as my husband would say!
I convinced several women from work to cut out a half hour early to grab drinks at the bar next door (Ginger Beer for me!). Just being around them makes me feel happy and confident. The amount of sheer brain power among them is astounding. I remember at one point in my career many years ago, before Lyle, thinking I wanted to take the easy road and find a position somewhere that offered me decent pay with a completely non-stress role. I got my wish and ended up at a small company where they offered me just that! But within months I was bored out of my mind and looking for interesting projects anywhere I could get them. It took me that little detour to understand I actually AM a learner for life. I want to be challenged. I want to set difficult goals. I want to surround myself with really smart people like these ladies and ask a ton of questions along the way.
