I'm trying to force myself to type to get over holding my finger out like I'm always pointing at something or someone! I was slicing watermelon yesterday and wasn't holding it in a smart way and it slipped and cut my fingertip. Jon ran around like a hero trying to find a bandage for me but nothing in the rental so he ran out to stock up on bandaids and these little finger condoms that keep water off. I MacGyver'ed it with paper towels and a hair band until he got back.
It was around 80 degrees when I finally got to the beach. Normally I never run with water but today I carried a bottle with me and finished it all. I hurried and put on my suit to enjoy the really cold lake water (there's still snow on the mountains!).
The boys did a little crawfishing. What do you call them? Crawfish, crayfish, or crawdads? A friend of mine pointed out that I used to call them crawdads but now that I live in SF I refer to them as crawfish. The Dude wasn't having much luck with deli meat on his clip (no hooks) so we'll try something else tomorrow.
This morning I ran to the lake and the males drove with all the stuff. It was a good five miles and I didn't feel tired at all but the heat became unbearable.
We rented a paddleboat and I did almost all the work because Jon was in charge of keeping Croc alive and The Dude was in charge of steering. My legs were cashed by the end. It was so peaceful out there with the family, floating and laughing hysterically over how absolutely nervous to death The Dude was over steering the boat. His knuckles were white the whole time! :)
When Croc said "I'm ready for a nap" we knew it was time to head back (when do they EVER say that?!). I looked at the clock and it was only 1pm but it felt like 8pm. That run really took it out of me! We took a dive in the big tub and then napped together. When we woke up I did some great stretches to open up my hips and stretch out my back -- the two areas that nag me the most.
Last night we took the boys to Squaw Village which looks weird without snow all over it! I think it's so cool and such a blessing that the kids get to see the mountains in the summer and winter. I want them to have happy memories of coming here throughout their young lives and associating it with nothing but fun -- swimming, snacks, sun, fishing, biking. I came to the realization about five years ago that there is no sense spending a ton of money on international or cross country vacations when the boys are this age because all they really care about is bending the rules and having fun. Lake vacations are - in my opinion - the best ways to spend quality time together.
I should round up all the photos we've taken of the boys in this very chair over the years. We used to have to help them up! We ate at Fireside Pizza which is my personal favorite in the Tahoe area. We love it because their pizza is good, they offer healthy salads, and they are great for kids. They have these little wooden game boards that always keep them entertained while we wait for food. We told the kids we would let them each get a toy in the Village if they had good behavior during dinner. We NEVER offer this up in our normal non-vacation life and it kind of threw The Dude for a loop :)
He selected these magic crystals which I thought was a sweet choice. I remember doing them when I was a kid too. Croc got Play-dough, bubbles, and a tiny pony. He's obsessed with ponies right now. Then we grabbed some ice cream at this little spot we've been eating in for years, Euro Sweets.
Croc got vanilla with confetti sprinkles which he didn't finish (is he really my child?) and Gus opted for lemon sorbet with a few candy Legos sprinkled on top. The cashier asked him, "Are you sure you want this kind? It's sour?" But he tried a bite and loved it. I love that his preference is for sorbet so I can steal bites.
It was one of those nights that you didn't want to end. The breeze was blowing a little but the sun was still hot and there was live music playing. The boys also had their best behavior. Before we left I said to The Dude, "You sure do look like a handsome dog!" and he said, "Yeah so what we're not seeing any people we know so why do I have to wear this shirt?" Ha ha ha!! We don't get dressed up much, can you tell?
What are you favorite ice cream flavors? Mine is cookies and cream.
