I was pretty happy to get these glasses this week which I'm going to use for running only (otherwise they'll get all scratched or lost). They were only $12 on Amazon and what I love most, and was my only requirement for a pair besides UV protection, was that they stay on my face when I sweat! These have really tight screws so the arms of the glasses stay firmly against your head. I have no idea why they send you a glasses case that feels more expensive than the actual glasses. I never keep my sunglasses cases, do you?
This quote right here is what I remind myself of nearly every workday when I have to train. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday runs are almost always welcomed but I admit it is really hard for me Monday - Thursday. Tomorrow I need to fit in another run which means it requires a little extra effort and planning, and a whole lot more self-motivation.
Yesterday I worked from home so I could watch this handsome devil. School is out this week and we always have to get a little creative with childcare on those days. We went to a coffee shop so I could work while he had breakfast and did Minecraft coding. It's his favorite game and he builds pretty cool things on it. We ran into one of his former teachers there and he was excited to see him. The Dude has had really incredible teachers in his life to this point.
Yes that is duct tape keeping his headphones together. We like to keep it as classy as possible at all times.
Then we went to Green Apple Books to check out the new releases. He picked out one for himself and we picked one out for Croc. Croc's was called Just Go To Bed which we thought was fitting for him :)
I know this looks like another item that would crowd a closet, but I could get some serious use out of this puzzle rolling mat! Especially over the holiday break when I plan to do at least one massive puzzle.
I abstained from spending money on a book for myself because I've started too many that I haven't finished lately. Holiday breaks are always a great time to reset my reading list and dive into a really big thick one. This bookstore always has the BEST staff picks...
Then I bent a huge rule and got The Dude a kids cone at Toy Boat. It was only 10:30am when I ordered it for him and the guy in line behind us said, "wow ice cream for breakfast, that's a treat!" and The Dude felt pretty special. We don't often get one on one time so I like to make him feel a little spoiled when we have these mornings. Plus he'd already eaten two breakfasts by then!
Then he sat on this toy pony and I realized just how big he is now. He's been riding this thing since he was a tiny baby and we used to hold him up on it. Now he looks too big to ride it! Jon has really great perspective on staying in the moment of your kid's development and not spending too much time being sad that they are growing up and changing. Every moment is a sweet one and one you'll wish later that you had enjoyed more while you were in it.
The guilt of eating ice cream so early in the morning was written all over his face. Literally. Chocolate all over his face :) We went on another bike ride through the park.
These pink and purple plants are gorgeous. Does anyone know what they are?
I'm super glad we spent $29.99 for a large pack of Pokemon cards that our kids only use for building card forts! They are like land mines in our house right now and if you accidentally step on one and knock it over, you better be ready for a serious talking to!!
Finally we have actual food in the house! When people are sick it seems like you live on popsicles and crackers and soup.
And I'm livin' on this... YUM!
I love this little reminder of easy ways to support an artist. Remember your artist friends this holiday season!
I just ordered my dress for the office holiday party and I'm so excited to have an opportunity to get dressed up! I'm taking my girlfriend with me to my company's party and then Jon and I are going to his party the next night. We didn't want to get a sitter two nights in a row so he was fine sitting my party out.
I love looking back at past holiday parties. We do the Irish goodbye every single time! Irish goodbyes are your best friend when you are sober and at a party ;) Fingers crossed Jon's tweed jacked and v-neck sweater combo makes a third annual appearance!!
So I have good news and bad news as it relates to the star of last night's Barf-o-Rama. Good news is that he made it the whole day without getting sick!! Bad news is that we think he has been washing his hands in the toilet. I heard the toilet lid slam yesterday when I know he didn't go to the bathroom. Then when he walked out of the bathroom he was drying his hands, but I never heard the faucet turn on. When Jon and I questioned him later he said "I won't wash my hands in the toilet or drink bath water ANY more, mom." Sometimes there are just no words to describe.
Needless to say we are figuring out how to explain the severity of touching toilet water to a 3-year-old.
Let's move on from toilet talk, shall we?
It's Tuesday and I have a few good stories floating around in my head for Smatterings!
89-Year-Old Grandma Makes Wacky Self-Portraits
My grandmas were incredible badasses, especially for their generation. One grandma proposed to my grandpa (unheard of at that time) and the other raised eight kids, including a blind son, with almost no help.
Kimiko Nishimoto also isn't your average grandma. She's 89 years old and she's taking these totally off the wall self-portraits posed in all these strange positions.
Her son arranged for her to attend a photography workshop about 17 years ago and she's been hooked on taking selfies ever since. She also takes really beautiful photos of flowers and other still life but my preference is for the ones with her as the subject!
Blue Whales: Right-"handed" or left?
Scientists at UC Santa Cruz spent six years studying the feeding habits of 63 blue whales off the Channel Islands in California and here's what they found:
Like humans, blue whales favor one side for repetitive behaviors, the researchers found. Unlike humans, the blue whales in the study tended to adjust their preferred side depending on the availability of food.
I had no idea that animals could have a side preference! Animals give us endless opportunities to learn new things.
Nigerian Women's Bobsled Team - breaking barriers
The powerful woman version of the movie Cool Runnings is playing out right now! I love stories of women athletes going places no one has gone before. Three women from Nigeria—driver Seun Adigun and brakewomen Akuoma Omeoga and Ngozi Onwumere—have qualified for Pyeongchang 2018. This is a big deal because it's the first time an African nation will be represented in the sport at a Winter Olympics.
They basically taught themselves everything about the sport including how to build their sled. All three were professional track and field athletes at one time, so competition is nothing new to these ladies.
I'll be cheering for them in 2018!!
I hope everyone has someone to celebrate with this week to give thanks! Our family is doing something incredibly low-key since every single one of our friends are out of town this year. It's strange because eating turkey with friends has become the celebrated tradition in our family since moving to San Francisco, so we're trying to get the boys excited about eating out for a change. I'm debating making pies from scratch so they can still chip in and cook something (half the fun of being together on Thanksgiving is cooking together in my opinion!).
Do you have any smatterings to share?
Did you watch the Olympics when they only held them every four years and they did Winter and Summer in the same year?
