Before we left for our weekend away, I got in a quick four miles while The Dude had soccer practice and look at this cute little free library in front of someone's yard. I actually saw TWO of these during the run! San Francisco is very generous with books! Do you have these mini libraries in your town?
We were jamming to get on the road before all the traffic hit for the long weekend. Can you tell we're excited to go stay in a hotel where we don't have to pay?!? Don't mind our disgustingly dirty windshield. It's impossible to keep car windows clean when you street park.
I wonder if driving over the Golden Gate Bridge will ever NOT take my breath away. I've read that they never actually stop painting it because as soon as they finish one spot, it's time to touch up another. The color is International Orange!
Do you see Primus on the radio? My idea of peaceful road trip music is Bob Dylan or something but Jon's idea is a little more hardcore.
Did you get a chance to see the harvest moon? It was magnificent and I don't use that word often. It was like this big fat glowing orb that felt like you could reach out and touch it. This picture reminded me of a preview for a David Lynch film or something.
We checked in to Silverado Resort and as soon as we hit the entrance we saw all these crowds of folks and saw this massive party happening on the grounds. It turns out they are hosting the Safeway Open PGA Tour here this weekend! The amount of people is crazy! I grew up in a family of big time golf lovers. My dad, brother, uncles, and sometimes aunts would play almost every weekend (as I've mentioned before, I wouldn't say I grew up in a family of feminists so my aunts often had to shoulder their way into playing!). I've never been a great player but I do enjoy a good tour.
We immediately ordered dinner because I was still starving from after my run! Jon got the brined pork chop, kids had pasta, and I had a pulled pork sandwich. Yep, I ate meat. It felt weird. But I wanted protein and they didn't have many vegetarian options. I think eating that is what made me feel SO deadweight on my run today.
When we got up, the kids immediately started saying the word "pool" over and over about 76 times so we relented even though it wasn't that hot out yet. I want you to look at this diving form. The outstretched arms, the bent knees, the out thrust chest... it's amazing no one ever tried to recruit me for a diving team. :) Actually I didn't learn to swim or dive until I was an adult - much like running!
We had to constantly watch Croc to make sure he wasn't moving toward the deep end. That kid is going to turn me fully gray by 43! But he does say some amazing things. A sample so far on the trip:
Croc: Mom, hold this.
(hands me a salt shaker)
Me: Crocy, what are you doing? Don't play with this— it's salt.
Croc: I know but it's so pretty and it just tastes so SO good!
Croc showering in the bathroom. Jon sees a razor in his hand.
Jon: Croc, put that down!! That's very unsafe!
Croc: But I'm brushing my hair!
(Jon pulls a wad of red hair from the razor)
You might be thinking, get control of your kid, woman! But it is really hard to constantly watch his every move. He is always on the move, looking for that next thing to TOON! (that's what we call pointless reckless behavior)
They are both very good boys. I am such a lucky mom, and I can't imagine not having the hustle bustle that is our family life!
I like to take pictures with the sun DIRECTLY in our faces!
See this bump under my knee? I got it during a bike accident I had about a year ago and the bump never went away. Does anyone know if there's anything I can do to make it go away? What is it? I somehow managed to hit the *exact* same spot on the corner of the bed last night. Yowzer!
We did some work from the room while the boys watched cartoons and then decided to drive to a playground about 15 minutes away to get them some exercise. With the tour at the hotel, the grounds are super crowded so we thought it would be better to drive a bit.
Jon gets full credit for finding one of the most amazing playgrounds ever! We loved the name too—Playground Fantastico!!
This steering wheel had little beads in it that sounded like a rain stick when you turned it. Look at croc's hair here... I want this color!
These swings were ridiculously high off the ground! It made you feel like you were at the top of a roller coaster. Yes, I still love swinging even as an adult, don't you?
The Dude couldn't believe this playground, and ran around nonstop for one hour! Look how sweet.
Jon somehow stubbed his toe on a step there and his toe swelled up and started bleeding. Never a dull moment with this crew! We stopped to get him bandages and I thought of this from my IG feed when I told Jon to hit In N Out on the way home from the playground!
I had the patty-less cheeseburger and fries. And then of course I felt really guilty about eating it so I laced up the running shoes! Whenever we travel I use MapMyRun or do a quick google search for local running routes. It's amazing how much research other people have already done for you as a runner! I found a nice 4-mile loop that was relatively flat which made me happy.
I got to see some of the tour. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of Phil Mickelson! The views from my run were unbelievable. This air in Napa is healing. The 80-something degree weather, however, I could have done without.
Just a light sweat! :)
Jon and Croc having deep conversations.
And now I'm enjoying a fire while waiting for my fish tacos to arrive. The patio doors are open and I can hear Weezer's performance from the party stage! "If you want to destroy my sweater oh whoa whoa, hold this thread as I walk awaaaayyy..." Taking me back in time to my college days!
What bands remind you of your younger days?
Tell me your favorite road trip music!
