I'm sitting here in my husband's Pink Floyd pajama pants with a wad of toilet paper in my lap (when will I become an adult and actually buy tissues?). It's a beautiful day and it's killing me that I'm not running right now.
My adorable children have gotten me sick. I swear they recover 50x faster than me. If I could only bottle up their immune systems and sprinkle it on my eggs... I've been sleeping on and off all day and now I want to write so I thought I'd share what I've learned about how to deal with sickness when you're training for a race.
I was trying to find a photo filter that would mask the breakout on my face. Successful? Negative. News flash: you still get breakouts in your 40s, folks!
So how do you know when to rest versus when to push through your sickness? I like how this blog puts it:
Before you lace up those running shoes, take the "neck check test". If your symptoms are "above the neck"… runny or stuffy nose, sneezing or sore throat, a little easy running probably won't do any harm and, in fact, might even help. (...) If, on the other hand, you have "below the neck" symptoms… fever, fatigue, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhea, chills, sweats, swollen glands or a hacking cough, then this indicates that you probably have a virus. Running under these conditions increases dehydration and can lead to more serious problems, so DO NOT RUN.
I definitely wouldn't call myself a 'Type A' kind of runner where I can't staaaand to go a day (or three) without running. I'm cool with it - I can definitely be lazy :) But I do know that running is good for my mental health and certainly my physical health. It makes me a nicer person, a better and more present mom, a more involved wife, and it gives me a break from the monotony. But when I'm training for a race (like CIM - 73 days!!!!!) I do start to get anxious when I miss more than a few days -- I've been out of commission for five now.
My words of advice for dealing with sickness when training:

My husband and I take great care in pointing out every typo or misspeak the other person has. Do you do this too? He points out my typo and I ask for pity for being sick. This is marriage! :)
